Sofie Goethals is a Belgian ceramic artist, glaze expert, and entrepreneur who serves as CEO of SOGO, her ceramics company. She has established herself as a leading authority in glaze chemistry and artisanal stoneware production, combining traditional pottery techniques with scientific expertise in ceramic glazing.

Goethals specializes in producing artisanal stoneware powder glazes, developing formulations that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes in ceramic work. Her expertise spans the full spectrum of glaze chemistry, from basic formulations suitable for beginners to advanced compositions for experienced ceramic artists.

As an educator, Goethals teaches glaze chemistry to ceramic makers at various skill levels. Her instructional approach bridges the gap between theoretical chemical principles and practical application in pottery, making complex glazing concepts accessible to both novice and experienced practitioners.

In 2024, Goethals published "Glashelder over glazuur," a comprehensive guide to glaze chemistry written in Dutch. The book quickly gained recognition within the ceramics community and became a reference work for Dutch-speaking ceramic artists and enthusiasts. The publication's popularity was demonstrated by its commercial success, selling out twice within its first year of publication.

Due to international demand, the book is scheduled for translation and publication in English and French editions, with release planned for summer 2026. This expansion will make Goethals' expertise accessible to a broader international audience of ceramic practitioners.

As CEO of SOGO, Goethals leads a company focused on ceramic arts and glaze development. Through SOGO, she continues to develop and distribute her artisanal glaze formulations while expanding educational offerings in ceramic arts and glaze chemistry.

Sofie Goethals was born in 1985 and has been passionate about clay since 2016. She holds a master's degree in Biomedical sciences and is described as a former scientist who transitioned to ceramics. SOGO keramiek has been a Handmade in Belgium label holder since April 2021.
